Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” has triumphed once again. The Houston Film Critics Society (HFCS) held their annual ceremony honoring the best in film in 2017, where “Lady Bird” earned top honors for best picture, director, and screenplay. “The Shape of Water” tied “Lady Bird” for most wins, earning accolades for best actress (Sally Hawkins), best original score (Alexandre Desplat) and best poster. “Blade Runner 2049” and “Coco” both earned two awards apiece, with the former getting nods for its visual effects and stunning cinematography from Roger Deakins; “Coco,” as per usual, won for best animated film, with an additional nod for best song (“Remember Me”).

A particular highlight of the event was HFCS’ annual Texas Independent Film award, which went to David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story.” Starring Casey Affleck (“Manchester By the Sea”) and Rooney Mara (“Carol”), the film followed a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost who returns to his home in an attempt to see his grieving wife, and explored love, loss, and the idea of existence.

We’ll just have to wait and see how the wins affect the official Oscar nominations, set to be announced Jan. 18. See the full list of winners below.
