Sony Pictures Classics debuted the official trailer for its upcoming film, “The Seagull.”
Based on the play by Anton Chekhov, “The Seagull” tells the story of a young woman who falls in love with the novelist friend of a actress. She faces love, rejection, and the whole of human emotions in the process.
Three-time Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan stars as Nina, the woman at the center of this story. Nina is a free-spirited but innocent girl who dreams of life beyond her estate. Ronan earned her first Academy Award nomination at just 13. It was for her supporting role in the film “Atonement,” based on the novel by Ian McEwan. She was nominated again for “Brooklyn” in 2015, and just this year for the film “Lady Bird.” She hasn’t taken a break yet. The actress is set to star in “On Chesil Beach” and later this year in “Mary Queen of Scots.”
Corey Stoll plays Boris Trigorin, the object of Nina’s affection. Stoll is known for films including “Midnight in Paris,” “This Is Where I Leave You,” and “Ant-Man.” He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his supporting work on “House of Cards,” and is playing Buzz Aldrin in Damien Chazelle’s “First Man.”
“The Seagull” also stars an incredible supporting cast that includes Annette Bening, Elisabeth Moss, Brian Dennehy, Billy Howle, and Mare Winningham.
Stephen Karam adapted the play into this screenplay. This is Karam’s second feature film, after last year’s “Speech & Debate,” which he adapted from his own play.
Michael Mayer directed this film. After making his feature debut with “A Home at the End of the World,” and a follow up, “Flicka,” Mayer has spent more time in television. “The Seagull” is his first feature film since 2006. He also produced the TV series “Smash” and “Do No Harm.”
The film will be released by Sony Pictures Classics on May 11.
