IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK KiKi Layne as Tish and Stephan James as Fonny Tatum Mangus/Annapurna Pictures

Love stories and romances have long fascinated the voters of the Academy. Last year, the strange relationship at the heart of “The Shape of Water” took the Academy by storm. Jack and Rose became icons in “Titanic” from James Cameron. The sprawling and multidecade relationship between two young boys growing up in Liberty City, Miami helped to push “Moonlight” towards a Best Picture win. Director Barry Jenkins will follow up his acclaimed film with another story of romance. Yet “If Beale Street Could Talk” focuses on the love you feel when barriers keep us apart. Distributed by Annapurna Pictures, today we received the final trailer for the Christmas release.

The band continues to march on for the upcoming Jenkins film. “If Beale Street Could Talk” follows the story of a young woman whose partner is sent to prison when he is accused of sexual assault. As a pregnant woman who misses her lover, she takes matters into her own hands and begins a quest to free him. The feature already received support from both the Gotham Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards.

Jenkins adapted a very difficult novel from the acclaimed writer James Baldwin. While the film and novel tackle big questions about race in America, that story is set against an undeniable tale of truth and love. Both Stephan James and Kiki Layne stand out from the film as the two young leads. Beyond James and Layne, there is an undeniable push for Regina King to potentially win an Oscar for her role. With King leading most pundits predictions, “If Beale Street Could” seems like it could make a big play on the awards front this year.
