Johnny Depp- The Rum Diary
Ryan Gosling- Blue Valentine
Leonardo DiCaprio- Inception
FOR HIM: One of the most popular actors working today. He'll win an Oscar one day. 3 prior nods and many snubs. He's due.
FOR HIM: Got great reviews out of Toronto and placed himself back on the map this past year with The Road and Crazy Heart.
FOR HIM: Never nominated and shows great range as a young actor. Snubbed hugely for Milk.
FOR HIM: One-time Oscar nominee. Relationship drama which the Academy embraces for its performances often.
FOR HIM: DiCaprio will capture his gold man one day. He also has another great performance in Scorsese's Shutter Island which opened to critics praise of him.
AGAINST HIM: Depends on the reception of the film.
AGAINST HIM: He has won an Oscar before. It'll need to be a unanimous applause for him.
AGAINST HIM: Can he be taken seriously as a leading man this soon?
AGAINST HIM: The Academy may make him wait some more for his second nomination. The word is good, not great.
AGAINST HIM: May split the vote with himself. Also, both films are early releases.
I would love to see Johnny Depp get an Oscar. Those top five would be a really cool top five give or take Rockwell finally getting some recognition and a few more. It's early. Let's dream.

George Clooney- The American
Sam Rockwell- Betty Anne Waters
Andy Serkis- Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
Mark Wahlberg- The Fighter
FOR HIM: Fresh off his career best performance, can he top it with back-to-back nominations.
FOR HIM: We have learned who Tom Hardy is now and he is a talent to watch out for in the future.
FOR HIM: One of the underrated actors of today. Could this be the year for him...finally?
FOR HIM: He got a BAFTA nomination last year for his same role and he has snubs in King Kong and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
FOR HIM: He's been welcomed to Oscar's club for his performance in The Departed. This seems like a perfect for him, a boxer.
AGAINST HIM: Could he be overexposed? You take a guess.
AGAINST HIM: If this is as small as his performance in Bronson, he won't even be a threat.
AGAINST HIM: This role could go supporting. Or he could get forgotten like he always does.
AGAINST HIM: Needs a big US release.
AGAINST HIM: David O. Russell films are hit and miss, mostly miss. It didn't help him in I Heart Huckabees.
